I am a doctoral student at The New York Botanical Gardens studying neotropical blueberries in Colombia using ethnobotany, phytochemistry, and genomics. Combining these different fields allows me to ask a range of interesting questions. How do broader socioeconomic systems effect conservation and management? How is knowledge about medicinal and cultural plant uses maintained within the community? How do cultivation of wild species effect the genes expressed and compounds present in neotropical blueberry fruits? How do compounds in neotropical blueberries interact synergistically to produce antioxidant activity and health benefits? I like to both conduct my research in a way that benefits local communities and disseminate my research in a way accessible to the general public.
