Orchids have many uses - edible, medicinal, explosives manufacture! Finding uses of orchids as materials was a surprise for @mastersmiss and her colleagues when they analyzed patent documents to look at commercial interest in the group of orchids traded as salep. Previously this group of orchids were thought to be of limited use; solely as food and traditional medicine. 'Patent analysis as a novel method for exploring commercial interest in wild harvested species' has just been published #OpenAccess in the journal Biological Conservation. Here we are sharing a photo of Green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio), one of the orchids used to make salep and a section of the oldest patent they found referring to using salep - from 1855 on using salep as an ingredient to help prevent thread from snapping during manufacture. Today we are bringing you some nice colour to brighten those winter days, for those of us in the northern hemisphere. The genus Taxus (more commonly known as yew in English) is an genus of evergreen gymnosperms. Unlike most other cone-bearing plants, this one develops fleshy arils to surround the seeds. Though the yew is incredibly toxic, the “berries” actually are not. But user be warned, the seeds inside are! This toxicity is due to a range of taxine alkaloids contained within the plant. These plants are also the source of taxol, a chemotherapeutic drug used in some types of cancers. Besides this and being frequently used in landscaping, the wood from yew is thought to be especially good for making bows due to its springiness. Indeed, the genus name is thought to descend from the Ancient Greek word for bow!
